    Please join us in giving a huge shout-out to this month’s Athlete Spotlight, Sandy Dumas! Sandy has been a dedicated member of MP Fitness since 2018, and she continues to inspire us all with her grit, determination, and tireless work ethic. She shows up, pushes herself, and proves every day that MP is genuinely for everyone. We are proud to have Sandy as part of our community and to celebrate her as this month’s Athlete Spotlight!

    1. When did you start your Functional Fitness journey, and what inspired you to pursue it?

    I started in 2018/19? It’s been so long, I can’t exactly remember! I was working at the health zone, running the smoothie bar, and a couple of my coworkers really encouraged me to try it out. I kept saying I want to try it when I’ve lost a little weight or feel a little more fit because all these people who worked with Jimmy at MP seemed like serious athletes who ate nails for breakfast and did burpees for fun! I finally listened when they said to go and try. He meets you where you’re at; the whole point is to become that strong athlete. I’m so glad I listened and tried! 

    2. What is your favorite thing about MP Fitness and why?

    My favorite thing about MP has to be the community that I’ve found there. Never in my life have I met more encouraging, kind people who want to see you succeed. There are all kinds of bodies, ages, athletic abilities, and life stages I’ve seen walking through those doors, and they are all met with the support and knowledge that they can do the work. We may not be lifting the same weights, and some of our abilities are different, but we all push each other to do our very best. If you’ve ever been the last person working in a WOD, you know how it feels to be cheered on so much that you HAVE to finish. You pick up that weight or do another rep because 10 people are yelling at you, saying, “You’ve got this, come on!” That is so cool. 

    3) What is one piece of advice you would give someone looking to try MP who has never exercised before?

    Just try it. Walk through those doors and you’ll realize you are so much stronger than you ever thought! I impress myself every time I pick up a barbell or work on a new move; it just requires trying. (And don’t leave anything out at the end or cuss, you’ll get burpees!!!) 

    4) How have the accomplishments you have made in the gym helped your confidence outside of the gym?

    Oh man. I look at problems differently because of MP. I know I can face any challenge because I am STRONG. I know I can lift boulders and climb mountains, and I don’t care how it looks to anyone but myself. You learn that you are your biggest competitor in the gym, and that is true outside of it. I’m here to grow, learn, and better myself every day. I also know if I fall off track in any aspect of life, I have the ability and grit to redirect and come back to it, even if it feels like starting over. 

    5) Describe your perfect day!

    My perfect day would start with a good cat cuddle, followed by heading out to the beach or the creek. I’d have all my favorite people (and dogs) around and enjoy a bunch of yummy food! Probably grill some hot dogs and have a campfire. It would end with watching the stars and telling stories until we’re so tired that we couldn’t keep our eyes open.
